Description:
Abstract:
The surface of the aquifer is considered to provide autogenic recharge (because limestone units of the aquifer itself receive direct rainfall and convey it downward). Adjacent non-limestone surfaces provide allogenic recharge (because they capture rainwater and conduct it to lower-lying limestone areas via surface drainage networks guided by land surface topography). The boundaries are based on information from USGS Geologic Map, 2007 LiDAR data (JALBTCX), and watershed boundaries by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Purpose:
This dataset shows the extent of areas that capture rainwater that goes to recharge the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA). This GIS dataset was created for the purpose of the Digital Atlas of Northern Guam (<http://north.hydroguam.net>).
Supplemental_Information:

Adjacent non-limestone surfaces provide allogenic recharge (because they capture rainwater and conduct it to lower-lying limestone areas via surface drainage networks guided by land surface topography). Use_Constraints:
Data set is for planning purpose only and not for use in litigation. The Island Research & Education Initiative (IREI) cannot assume liability for any damages or misrepresentations caused by any inaccuracies in the data or as a result of the data to be in a particular system.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
A shapefile of the outline of Guam was used as a starting point. The file was then 'cut' to create the aquifer recharge zones which are based on geologic and topographic information. Whenever possible boundaries from the source layers were traced.
